A handful of local leaders spent the week leading up to Halloween not preparing to pass out candy but rather in Japan on a combined goodwill and recruiting trip for Jackson-Madison County.

Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist and Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris traveled with Kyle Spurgeon, president and CEO of the Chamber, and Mandy White, senior vice president of economic development with the Chamber. Harris' and Gist’s wives accompanied the group at the request of Pacific Industrial.

The group traveled over 13,000 miles with the goal of fostering relationships with executives of Japanese companies that are already located in Jackson. The group made one visit to a prospective company while they visited.

“We just thought it would be a good move on the city’s part to call on our corporate people who have existing plants here in Jackson and foster that relationship,” Gist said. “I think it was unexpected on their part because obviously they don’t get a lot of visitors into town.”
