Jackson Chamber's 2017 Leadership Jackson class.

The Jackson Chamber is pleased to announce the nominees selected for its 2017 Leadership Jackson class. Leadership Jackson is a leadership development program for community members who demonstrate leadership potential. Sponsored by the Jackson Chamber, the program is an opportunity for local professionals to learn more about the community and the challenges it faces.

The class participated in a full day information session in late August to get acquainted and find out more about what their Leadership Jackson experience will entail. The session was led by Leadership Jackson 2017 Chair Sarah Johnson, director of population health & value based contracting, The Jackson Clinic P.A.; and the program’s Vice Chair, Pierre DuVentre, owner, D’Top Roofing and Repair. In two weeks, Leadership Jackson class members will go on a two-day opening retreat.

“As we begin the new year in Leadership Jackson, Pierre and I are overwhelmed with excitement and enthusiasm for the new class,” says Johnson. “I am deeply honored to participate in such an outstanding, community focused program. Each year brings a unique group of Jackson’s finest together who further develop into highly contributing Jacksonians for years to come. We encourage each class member to embrace this opportunity and be open to new experiences and ideas that will challenge your current perspectives and beliefs. This will be an experience like no other!”

Class members will meet weekly for sessions on various topics. A leadership skill-building component is incorporated into each session. Leaders in key areas, such as health care, criminal justice, economic development, quality of life, education and government will share an overview of the present state, challenges, and future vision. This information provides the class with a broad understanding of the inter-workings of Jackson-Madison County and a big picture view. It also engages them in a self-analysis of where they can best make a positive impact by getting involved or by being a resource for their company or sphere of influence.

Let the fun times begin and the good times roll,” says DuVentre. “I would like to welcome the 2017 Leadership Jackson class. You are about to have a remarkable experience learning about the city, your capabilities, and ways to grow outside of your comfort zone as an effective leader. So buckle up, hold on tight and be prepared to take flight as we have this out of space experience! Welcome Leadership Jackson Class of 2017!”

Around 250 attended the celebration that included employees and their families.   Pratt Industries celebrated working over 3 Million hours without a Lost Time Accident at the Jackson Bowling Alley and Fun Center on August 12. This excellent accomplishment shows the high standards of safety within the facility and its care and concern for its employees. A lost time accident is an OSHA recordable incident in where an employee is unable to return to work based on an injury/illness event on the job. Pratt industries and its team members have insured the safety of its workers by engaging all employees to watch out for each other, continuous training and providing daily reminders for safe operating methods, procedures and PPE to deter such incidents.
Employees and their families enjoyed go-carts, games, bowling and more.   “The Pratt Humboldt family takes great pride in our each others’ welfare and well-being,” says Jeff Coleman, general manager. “You work safely for the spouses and children who had such a great time at this event.”
Food, fun and prizes were also enjoyed by the group.   85 employees and family members (250 total attendees) enjoyed activities from bowling to golf, go-cart racing, food, various games and all activities provided by the center. Coleman says, “In June 2018, we look forward to a 10-year celebration of No Lost Time Accidents.” The sixth annual Tina Turner Heritage Days returns to Brownsville, TN September 22-24 with a line up staged to be Simply The Best Tina Turner festival to date. About the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center
The West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center offers a refreshing Southern experience showcasing the history and culture of rural West Tennessee. Inside, visitors can learn about the history of cotton, explore the scenic and “wild” Hatchie River and get to know the legendary musicians who call West Tennessee home. Also, located on the grounds is Flagg Grove School, the childhood school of Tina Turner now home of the world renowned Tina Turner Museum, and the last home of Blues pioneer Sleepy John Estes. The West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center is located along the Americana Music Triangle, the world’s #1 music destination - a preservation project along a 1,500-mile stretch of highway that birthed nine uniquely American genres of music.

About Tina Turner Museum at Flagg Grove School
What’s Love Got to Do with It? Everything --- a love of Tina Turner’s music and pop culture legacy, a love of historic preservation, a love of local communities and most of all a love for honoring the memories of those that traversed through the doors of Flagg Grove School. Via a special video that was filmed on the set at an IO commercial in Switzerland, Tina recalled the impact of education on her career.
“Everyone has a dream, but I have to say that your dreams cannot work without education,” says Tina. “It’s essential. It goes hand in hand. These days you must communicate with people. If you want to run your business, you need to have an education or you will have to depend on someone else and that is not always comfortable. I hope that as people walk through the school they see that I set an example for a home town girl that grew up in hard times that made a good life for herself and to follow by example.”
To date, over 604 million unique media impressions have been acquired on the museum. Designed by renowned interior designer Stephen Sills, the museum sanctioned by Tina features multiple costumes from designers Bob Mackie, Giorgio Armani and Versace, gold record awards and photos from Tina’s personal collection. The exhibit, which is free for all visitors, is located adjacent to the WTDHC at 121 Sunny Hill Cove, Brownsville, TN 38012.

It’s no small task to help small businesses and entrepreneurs make their dreams come true. The Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC), under the supervision of Jackson State Community College, has been working double time for the last year and a half. With over $2.5M capital investments in July 2017, this has been its best month-to-date since its beginning in the mid-1980s. July also saw six new business start-ups, the creation of 14 new jobs and the retention of 87 jobs. The center, housed inside the Jackson Chamber, operates under the direction of Ron Acree and Joel Newman.

“Ron and I are delighted with the results, and it shows a renewed confidence in the economy,” says Joel Newman, director of The West Tennessee Business Resource Center and small business specialist with the TSBDC. “Our goal has always been job creation and to help people realize their dream or to prevent it from becoming a nightmare.” They have helped a wide range of businesses - everything from a hair salon to a truck transport company, from manufacturing to retailing and from industrial waste to recycling. “We don’t treat every project like a template, each is individual and personal, and we try to make the development and the outcome as realistic as possible,” said Newman. “We let people know if we do not think something is sustainable.”

From left: Ron Acree, TSBDC; former client, Dessie Hardee and Joel Newman, West Tennessee Business Resource Center and TSBDC, talk business.

The Tennessee Small Business Development Center/Jackson State Community College is a collaborative effort with the Jackson Chamber to provide free business counseling. Ron Acree, director of the TSBDC, and Newman have a wealth of knowledge providing free, confidential business counseling which includes information on business start-ups, buying and selling, as well as expansion plans to move a business to the next level. They can help with cash flow analysis, accessing lenders, along with the ability to help develop a realistic and sustainable business plan.

“We are here to serve the nine-county area that includes Chester, Decatur, East Gibson, Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Madison and McNairy counties” states Acree. “We are proud of our accomplishments, but look forward to every new project and to continue to help create new jobs.”

If you need business advice for either a start-up or existing business, take advantage of this free service. It is available to anyone by reaching out to Newman at jnewman@jacksontn.com or Acree at racree@tsbdc.org or by phone at 731-423-2200.

Reverend Jesse & The Holy Smokes play at Jackson's AMP at the market for one of its free outdoor concerts provided to the community.

Jackson, Tennessee has been recognized as one of the “Best Cities to Live in on a $100K Salary” in the U.S. according to Fortune Magazine’s August issue. The article is based on MagnifyMoney’s look at the cost of living in 381 U.S. major metropolitan areas. This comparison loan-shopping site ranks their results by comparing how much cash is leftover after paying household expenses. In their study, Jackson ranked number six in the nation, with five metro areas in Tennessee falling into the top 10. The $100,000 income level can be used as a comparison tool for families either below or above that combined income level.

“We are pleased to receive this ranking,” said City of Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist. “We have a great city that not only offers healthy living, a great education, health care and a thriving workforce; but this reinstates that we are one of the most affordable places to live in the U.S.”

The analysis was made by comparing a two-earner household with one child and a gross annual income of $100,000 in U.S. Metro areas. Estimated monthly expenses included childcare, transportation, food, housing, student loans, savings and entertainment. These were subtracted from after-tax income. The percentage of remaining income verses total monthly expenses were the defining factors. Jackson, Tennessee can boast that it is a great place to live to stretch a paycheck with only 64% of annual income being paid for routine expenses.

“Jackson, Tennessee is one of the top places in the country to maximize your income while enjoying a wonderful quality of life,” says Jackson Chamber President/CEO Kyle Spurgeon. “Low cost of living is one factor that makes us attractive to industry, businesses and entrepreneurs of all kinds. We have and are continuing to create an environment centered around healthy lifestyles, an educated workforce, and strong cultural amenities.”

Jackson's latest mural painted by local artists in Downtown.

Jackson boasts a great community, touting health-consciousness, great medical facilities, a robust econmomic climate, a strong workforce, and contiuous improvements to education and public safety. Known for its innovation and forward thinking, Jackson is also recognized as a Smart Gigabit Community (or “Gig City”) bringing ultra-fast Internet speeds for the next generation of education, medical care, public safety and economic development.

Jackson also provides great entertainment including festivals, outdoors and parks, The Jackson Generals - a AA minor league baseball team, arts, symphony concerts, free outdoor concerts at the AMP, a farmer’s market and much more. On Jackson’s horizon are amenities such as new greenways, bike trails, kayaking, bike share, theLOCAL which is a micro-retail development for entrepreneurs and artisans, and many good things to come.

“We strive to attain the best environment for creating jobs and expanding existing businesses in Jackson and Madison County,” said Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris. “Knowing that our workforce can make a great living while providing for their family, sets us apart from many cities in America.”
