Jackson Fire Department is announcing the Inaugural Patriot Day Memorial Stair Climb at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, September 10, 2022, at the Ballpark at Jackson, 4 Fun Place, in Jackson, Tennessee. There were 343 firefighters who selflessly sacrificed their lives on September 11, 2001. The objective of this event is to bring awareness and honor all heroic first responders that tragically lost their lives in the line of duty on that day.     “We will ‘never forget’ the growing list of heroes who have died due to illnesses related to their courageous work throughout the rescue and recovery effort,” said Jackson Fire Department Chief Darryl Samuels. “As we continue to face overwhelming odds, we will do so, with strength, resolve and unity. God bless the United States of America.” The stair climb is open to all first responders, military personnel, and members of the community. The stair climb will consist of participants ascending approximately 2200 stairs, which is symbolic of the 110 stories ascended by first responders at the World Trade Center. The stair climb may be completed in full personal protective gear, partial gear, or gym clothes. In addition to the stair climb, there will also be ground games held for adults and children, vendor booths, a dunking booth, and much more! We look forward to your support of this worthy cause to honor those who have gone before us. In celebration of Jackson-Madison County Bicentennial, the City of Jackson sponsored a design contest to create a fresh, unifying design for a new City of Jackson flag. The public was invited in February to participate in the city’s new flag design contest and a wide variety of Jackson residents submitted designs to Mayor Scott Conger’s office for this important historical occasion. “I’m excited about having our new city flag in time for the end of our city’s bicentennial celebration,” said Mayor Scott Conger. “Thank you to all the artists who submitted designs for this contest.” The City of Jackson Public Art Commission narrowed the entries to three finalists. The public is invited to view the top three designs, share comments and vote for their favorite through May 31. To choose the final design, the Public Art Commission will evaluate public comments and the entry getting the most votes. Voting is open to all residents of the City of Jackson, TN. “A city flag is a timeless symbol capturing the essence and diversity of our community,” said Andrew Boks, Chairman of the Public Arts Commission. “I look forward to which flag our community chooses.” The artist selected for the final design will be notified July 1, 2022. The artist will then be recognized along with the new flag design, which will be unveiled to the public during the Jackson-Madison County Bicentennial event on August 12, 2022 at The Carl Perkins Civic Center.
