The class represents public, private and home-schooled juniors in Jackson - Madison County high schools. Leadership University is a ten-month program designed to identify a diverse group of high school students who demonstrate leadership potential and to develop, in an interactive environment, the framework for constructive leadership, committed involvement,and responsible participation in the future of this community. “Participants bring different gifts, talents, and experiences to the program and all are committed to taking the next steps to grow in leadership and life. The class of 2023-2024 has represented their schools, families, and the program well,” says Alan Brown, 2023-2024 Leadership University Chair. “They are graduating with an enhanced understanding of their own ability as well as the responsibility for serving the Jackson community. It has been a privilege to serve as chairperson of the board this year. It is the entire Leadership University board that makes the program what it is and I am so appreciative of each of them.” Throughout the program, class members completed 64 classroom hours, 12 hours of community service, and a group project. Leadership University students discussed ethical leadership with local leaders, participated in mock job interviews, tackled alcohol and drug issues, and other activities. The program helps the class members see their community from different viewpoints and focus on where they can make a positive difference. During the celebration, class members were recognized for their achievements and received their Leadership University graduate certificate of completion. These finalists showcased their civics knowledge through live quizzes and presented their essay topics to a panel of judges.  The National Civics Bee is a nationwide initiative designed to inspire young Americans to actively participate in civic life and contribute positively to their communities. Organized in partnership with The Civic Trust of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the competition aims to cultivate informed citizens who engage constructively within their communities and foster trust in democratic institutions.  The Greater Jackson Chamber was one of five chambers in Tennessee to pilot this program.   Phoebe Coleman from Union City Middle School was named the winner of the competition. Skyler Hillin from Union City Middle School placed second, and Makyla Love from North Parkway Middle School placed third. These top three finalists will compete in the National Civics Bee – Tennessee State Finals in May.  "The Greater Jackson Chamber recognizes the importance of empowering young people to become active participants in shaping our community," said Vicki Bunch, Chief Workforce Development Officer. This Civics Bee is a valuable initiative to spark civic participation among our students."  Join Shiloh National Military Park for a special Solar Eclipse Day on Monday, April 8, 2024! “An eclipse is one phenomenon that is actually more impressive from the ground!” Leroy Chiao NASA Astronaut Mission Commander, ISS Expedition 10 We will be experiencing a solar eclipse with the partial eclipse beginning at 12:39 pm, and the full eclipse at approximately 1:56 pm. In honor of this event, Shiloh rangers will be hosting a Solar Eclipse Day. Our park’s telescopes (each with the appropriate filters) will be available for all visitors to experience the event. Come and join us as we learn about solar eclipses and then get a rare opportunity to see a full one! We will have solar eclipse glasses available for use, and each Junior Ranger will receive a Solar Explorer Junior Ranger badge. The program starts at our Shiloh Visitors Center at 12:30 pm and will end at approximately 2:00 pm. Participation in this camp is free! The Jackson Choral Society, under the direction of Zach Young, will be joined by members of the Jackson State Community College Innovation ensemble, directed Esther Gray. The 80+ member combined choir will be accompanied by a string orchestra. The program will consist of several shorter pieces around the theme of “Light!,” followed by the the Mid-South premier of Illuminare, a recently-composed multi-movement choral work by Elaine Hagenberg. The piece takes us through a season of beauty and goodness that has been disrupted by darkness and confusion. But as Light gradually returns, hope is restored, illuminating our future and guiding us in peace. The concert will be held on Saturday, April 20 at 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Jackson. Tickets are $20 at the door and $15 for students.
