Joel Newman is the director of the West Tennessee Business Resource Center and is the senior small business specialist for the Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) for the Southwest Tennessee region. He joined the TSBDC at Jackson State in 2009. A certified business counselor, Newman was previously the chairman of SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives). He has been a volunteer with the Jackson Chamber since his retirement from the Kellwood Co. in 1999 where he was vice president of sourcing and offshore manufacturing for the Outerwear Division.
Joel has many years of experience in manufacturing, retail and business management. He has had an extensive career in the apparel industry working for Phillips Van Heusen, BVD, and Elco Coat Company and is well versed in both branded and private brand merchandising.
Newman focuses on helping start-up businesses, formulating business plans, and helping existing businesses with everyday cash flow and marketing problems. He has been deeply involved in the Jackson-Madison County non-profit arena helping agencies to focus on the business aspect of their business.
