Partners-in-Education receive Golden Apple Awards at Breakfast

In May 2015, the Jackson Chamber celebrated the 32nd Anniversary of the Partners-in-Education program at its annual Quarterly Membership/Education Recognition Breakfast with 67 Partners-in-Education (PIE) receiving Golden Apple Awards.

Partners-in-Education is a program that was started in 1983 by the late Dr. Tommy Allen, who was Assistant Superintendent of the Jackson City School System. As soon as the program was developed, it was turned over to the chamber for administration. The chamber has served as the liaison between the business and education community ever since.

The PIE program began with 7 partnerships and now has approximately 250 partnerships today. The program creates a connection between businesses and schools, giving businesses a chance to be more involved with the future of students and our community.

“Because of PIE, schools have gained countless resources over the years – some time, some in-kind and some monetary,” says Shirley Jones, Senior Vice President, Public Affairs for the Jackson Chamber.

At the breakfast, Golden Apple Awards were presented to local schools and businesses. In order to receive a Golden Apple Award, the schools and businesses had to coordinate 10 or more activities with their partners during the 2014-15 school year. All activities that were coordinated between partnerships had to be reported in writing to Shirley Jones, vice president of public affairs for the chamber, to receive credit.

The Bank of Jackson, the sponsor for all of the chamber’s education programs, was recognized at the chamber’s breakfast. “We are excited to have The Bank of Jackson supporting education in Jackson,” Jones said. “I have the privilege of partnering with them and I cannot say enough about their wonderful support.”
