When it comes to economic development, new industry announcements often steal the spotlight. The excitement of a fresh venture, the promise of new jobs, and the influx of capital investment are undoubtedly important. However, it's crucial to recognize that the backbone of Jackson, Tennessee's economy is not solely built on new arrivals, but on the strength and growth of our existing manufacturers.
In a typical year, existing industries are responsible for creating nearly 85% of the jobs and capital investment announced in our community. This statistic might surprise some, but for those of us who work closely with these companies, it’s a powerful reminder of their crucial role in driving local job creation and economic growth. Our existing manufacturers are the bedrock upon which Jackson's economic landscape is built.
Jackson is home to a diverse manufacturing base that spans multiple sectors, making our local economy both dynamic and resilient. Whether it’s food manufacturing giants like Kellanova and Conagra, automotive leaders like Toyota Motor Manufacturing Tennessee and Pacific Industries, consumer products from Delta Faucet and Stanley Black & Decker, or the robust steel production of Gerdau, our manufacturers are integral to the fabric of our community. This diversity not only strengthens our local supply chain but also fosters a skilled workforce across various industries.
Recent expansions from these established industries underscore their confidence in Jackson's business environment and workforce. For example, in 2023, Toyota Boshoku Tennessee announced a $54.4 million expansion, which is set to create 80 new jobs. Similarly, companies like Pace Industries, Lightning Source, and Prysmian Group have also chosen to grow their operations here. These expansions are more than just numbers—they are a testament to the strong relationships we’ve built with these companies and the ongoing trust they place in our community.
Recognizing the vital role of existing manufacturers, Jackson has implemented targeted strategies to support and retain these businesses. The Greater Jackson Chamber, in collaboration with Team Madison County, is dedicated to ensuring that our existing industries have the resources they need to thrive. This includes access to local, regional, state, and federal support, from customized workforce training to expansion incentives. By providing these essential resources, we’re not just supporting individual companies—we’re nurturing the entire economic ecosystem of Jackson.
At the core of these efforts is a simple yet powerful idea: by nurturing our existing industries and facilitating their growth, we’re ensuring a stable economic foundation for our community. While it’s exciting to welcome new businesses, it’s equally important to recognize and support those that have already chosen to invest in Jackson. These companies are not just participants in our economy; they are its drivers.
As we look to the future, the continued growth and success of our existing manufacturers will be key to Jackson's economic resilience. By building on this strong foundation, we can continue to attract new investments while maintaining the diverse and vibrant economy that makes our community thrive.
