Wayne Bowen, professor of history and director of interdisciplinary studies at the University of Central Florida, will speak about his work to preserve cultural antiquities in wartime Iraq as part of the Jones Lecture Series at Union University Oct. 9.

Bowen has written extensively on the history of Spain, military history and the Middle East. The topic of his lecture comes from his experience as a U.S. Army officer who served as a civil affairs officer for higher education and antiquities in the Iraq War. His responsibilities included the preservation of archaeological sites dating back to the Assyrian Empire.

Bowen is the author of “Truman, Franco’s Spain, and the Cold War,” “The History of Saudi Arabia” and “Undoing Saddam: From Occupation to Sovereignty in Northern Iraq,” among other works.

His lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the Carl Grant Events Center. It is free and open to the public.
