First Methodist Downtown has been a Christ-like presence in Jackson for nearly 200 years. Since the city’s beginnings in the 1820’s they have served the local community and provided a vibrant Methodist gathering in the downtown area.
“We are one of few houses of Worship that have been a part of downtown Jackson since its inception,” Adam Johnson, director of youth & creative ministries, said. “There was a growing need for churches and service agencies as Jackson began to expand, and we have sought to continue that mission as we have grown.”
In the centuries since First Methodist Downtown was founded, they have worked to grow both internally through membership and externally through impact and missions. “We are committed to helping all the people within Jackson, in particular our neighbors in the downtown community,” said Johnson.
First Methodist Downtown is committed to not only speaking the word, but also to living it out: their vision is to gather together in meaningful community, grow with each other as we are on our spiritual journeys, and to then go and serve others and make disciples. Their small groups, comprised of members of the church, are frequently involved in community outreach, including RIFA and Emergency Response volunteer work.
