On October 3 and 4, more than 120 students from Jackson-Madison County Schools took part in a unique opportunity to explore the diverse and evolving world of manufacturing. As part of Manufacturing Day (MFG Day), students toured local facilities and learned firsthand how creativity, technology and problem-solving come together to shape modern manufacturing.
MFG Day, the manufacturing industry’s biggest annual event, aims to inspire the next generation to pursue rewarding careers in this dynamic field. Students had the chance to meet the individuals behind the products they encounter every day and see how their classroom learning connects with real-world scenarios.
The event kicked off with a series of talks by manufacturing professionals, including current and former Jackson State Community College (JSCC) students who worked in the industry while completing their studies. Plant managers from various companies also shared insights on the skills and knowledge required to succeed in today’s manufacturing roles.
Students were then taken on guided tours of the facilities, where they observed firsthand the cutting-edge technology and innovation that drive the modern manufacturing process. From robotics to logistics and management, the experience showcased the wide variety of career paths available within the industry.
According to The Manufacturing Institute, 4 million manufacturing jobs will need to be filled by 2030. Events like MFG Day are critical in raising awareness among students about these opportunities, which span fields such as engineering, computer science, accounting, human resources, and beyond.
The Greater Jackson Chamber coordinated the event in partnership with local manufacturers, Jackson State Community College and Jackson-Madison County School System. The event was sponsored by the Leaders Education Foundation.
