From accounting and payroll services to tax preparation and working for clients with the IRS, Steele Martin Jones CPAs and Business Advisors is a multi-service accounting firm with clients throughout West Tennessee and across the country. It offers a comprehensive range of services, including tax preparation, business advising, accounting and payroll.

Besides its accounting expertise, though, Steele Martin Jones considers itself unique when compared to other CPA firms, said lead partner Tom Carson Jones. “We’re the CPA firm that talks to our clients. We work with our clients all year long to help their business grow, make good financial choices and optimize their tax commitment.”

Steele Martin Jones was founded by Mike Steele in 1979. Partner Gary Martin joined in 1982, and Jones joined the firm in 1994. Both Steele and Martin have retired, and, today, firm partners Jones, Brandon Clenney and Kevin McKenzie oversee a staff of professional accountants.

“Our focus is on small-to-medium sized businesses and individuals,” said Clenney. Along with the obvious services of accounting and tax preparation, he added, other services include helping clients with their payroll, buy or sell a business, start a new business, manage financial statements, manage sales taxes and plan for retirement.

McKenzie considers the firm a client’s non-equity business partner. “We get to know our clients well. As a former business owner, I understand their challenges. I learn their business and how it operates. I consider myself a business partner as I help their business grow.”

More than half of the firm’s staff has been certified as QuickBooks ProAdvisors. Steele Martin Jones will install, train staff and offer support in QuickBooks for clients. Or, Steele Martin Jones will handle all of the accounting and payroll needs for the client, Jones said.

Tax preparation and working with clients when the IRS requests an audit are also important services, Clenney said. “We are one of the few firms in the area that actually specializes in tax preparation and working with the IRS.”

Each of the three partners is active in their respective communities. Jones, who lives in Jackson, has been Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 6 since 2006, is finance chair for St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and advises the CO.STARTERS program at theCO, Jackson’s entrepreneur center. He has led many seminars for the Jackson Chamber and its Small Business program. McKenzie, who lives in Parsons, has been a long-serving softball coach. Clenney, raised in Milan, is minister at Springville Church of Christ near Paris, Tenn.

The firm has been active in the Jackson Chamber for many years. Founding Partner Steele helped the Chamber create its Business of the Year awards. Steele Martin Jones has won three of those awards: Small Business of the Year, Cornerstone Business of the Year and a Pinnacle Award.

Jones likes having the firm in Jackson because “we already know many of our clients and their roles in the community. We like being a part of this community’s success.”
