The Greater Jackson Chamber was recently awarded a Workforce Invest Grant by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to support collaborative efforts in training and education. The grant will fuel the West TN TechBuild & Smart Futures project, a collaborative initiative aimed at preparing a skilled workforce for the region's growing clean energy and construction sectors.
In response to the increasing demand for a trained workforce by business and industry, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), along with third-party consultant VisionFirst Advisors, developed an innovative initiative known as Workforce Invest in 2022. The goal of the program is to address critical workforce development needs.
West TN TechBuild & Smart Futures will offer hands-on training, certifications, and work-based learning opportunities, preparing participants for careers as electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, carpenters and construction managers. The program targets diverse populations, including veterans, single parents, low-income individuals, and more. TVA's funding will cover certification testing, VR technology training equipment and recruitment efforts for work-based learning opportunities.
"Workforce development is at the heart of what makes our community thrive," said Logan McCoy, Vice President of Existing Industry & Workforce at the Greater Jackson Chamber. "Our industries rely on a steady pipeline of skilled professionals to stay competitive and grow, and with TVA's support, we can expand training opportunities that directly meet these needs. This grant enables us to equip local talent with the skills needed to fill essential roles, ensuring that our businesses and region have the workforce they need to succeed well into the future."
This initiative is a partnership among Jackson-Madison County Schools, Henderson County Schools, TCAT Jackson, and industry leaders like the Tennessee Builders Education Foundation and regional workforce boards.
"With TVA's support, we're able to expand our reach, invest in innovative training tools and connect people with skills that will empower them for a lifetime," said Dr. Jacquene Rainey, President of TCAT Jackson. "This initiative strengthens our ability to provide hands-on, industry-focused training, equipping individuals with essential skills that not only enhance their career prospects but also support the workforce needs of local industries. It's a win for our students and for the growth of our entire community."
The Tennessee Valley is a region abounding in geographic and economic opportunity. Workforce Invest, a first-of-its-kind program, leverages funds to develop a highly trained and qualified workforce to meet current and future market demands. "TVA Economic Development is committed to our communities. Workforce Invest allows us to invest in programs that address the specific workforce and education needs at a local level. Each project funded provides needed training to residents while also filling the needs of industry. We are proud to support our local economic development partners," said John Bradley, Senior Vice President of Economic Development for TVA.
"Providing meaningful workforce training is a cornerstone issue of our national economy. TVA's insight to develop the program will provide a multitude of opportunities not just for the participants but for entire communities. VisionFirst is thrilled to serve as the programmatic coordinator for Workforce Invest," said Gray Swoope, President & CEO of VisionFirst Advisors. Over the last three years, TVA has awarded Workforce Invest grants to more than 40 communities totaling more than $3 million.
